D.Razumkov: Latvia’s support is utterly valuable for Ukraine

( Information Department of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Secretariat )

”Sustained, unwavering and principled support from Latvia is valuable and important for Ukraine,” -- Dmytro Razumkov

During his official visit to the Republic of Latvia, the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Dmytro Razumkov met with the Speaker of the Saeima of Latvia Inara Murniece.

Dmytro Razumkov thanked Latvian parliamentarians for their steady, unwavering and principled support in the international arena, in particular within the framework of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

"We do feel Latvia’s support both in protecting our territorial integrity and returning Ukraine’s temporarily occupied territories as well as towards ending the war in the east of Ukraine and returning the annexed territories of the Crimea," the speaker of the Ukrainian parliament stated.

In her turn, Inara Murniece assured that Latvia had always advocated the inviolability of Ukraine's state borders and would sharply react to any encroachments on its territorial integrity.

The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada also stressed that Ukraine's euro-integration aspirations have not changed. “This is truly confirmed by the policies of the President, the Parliament and the state as a whole. Long ago we have made our choice and still pay a heavy price for it,” he emphasized.

Dmytro Razumkov noted that reforms should become important steps in Ukraine's further development.

“Presently, the key issues for us are the fight against corruption and openness of our authorities. We have already removed parliamentary immunity, restored responsibility for illegal enrichment, and launched an anti-corruption court reform… However, the bulk of changes are still in the pipeline,” he emphasized.

The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine also expressed his hope for deepening inter-parliamentary relations with Latvia.

“The friendship group with Ukraine in the Saeima of Latvia is the largest one – of 44 representatives.  I do hope that not only at the level of our parliamentary leaders, but also at the level of parliamentary routine, we will be able to improve our friendly and sincere relations between the states,” he stressed.

Dmytro Razumkov also participated in the laying of flowers at the Freedom Monument.

The meeting was also attended by co-chairs of the Inter-parliamentary relations group with the Republic of Latvia Solomiia Bobrovska and Taras Tarasenko, as well as MP Oleksandr Merezhko, the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Committee on Foreign Policy and Inter-parliamentary Cooperation.
