VRada and Cabinet launch joint Euro-Atlantic integration platform: Parliamentary briefing

There has been held a briefing “Euro-Atlantic Integration Through Parliament and Government Interaction” at the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine

In attendance, there were Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on National Security, Defence and Intelligence Oleksandr Zavitnevych, Vice Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba, Head of the NATO Representation to Ukraine Alexander Vinnikov, Minister of Defence of Ukraine Andrii Zahorodniuk, and Deputy Minister of Economic Development, Trade and Agriculture of Ukraine Svitlana Panaiotidi.

The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on National Security, Defence and Intelligence Oleksandr Zavitnevych stated: “Both Euro-Atlantic integration as well as heading to NATO remain our strategic directions and our clear needs, in as much as the threat from Russia does not tail away in the coming decades. We are ready to systematically give a rebuff and become a fully integrated part of the Euro-Atlantic security environment”.

O. Zavitnevych also informed that in order to address the issue of Euro-Atlantic integration and NATO membership, the Parliament, in harness with the Government, had created a platform for cooperation between the parliament and the government. Oleksandr Zavitnevych stressed that the Committee would pay special attention to parliamentary oversight of the defence and security sector.

Mariana Bezuhla, Deputy Chairperson of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on National Security, Defence and Intelligence, Chairperson of the Sub-committee on Introduction of NATO Values and Standards, International Military Cooperation and Peacemaking observed: “The said parliament-to-government platform provides for implementing a road map and constant collaboration aiming to achieve the ultimate goal, which is – joining NATO”.

The Vice Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba thanked the Parliament for its willingness to cooperate: “Never before have the Government and the Verkhovna Rada built up such a steadfast joint platform that indeed furthers moving towards European integration”.

He then also averred: “The course towards Ukraine's Euro-Atlantic integration remains unchanged.  And the Government's action programme clearly sets forth the Government's goal for the next five years: meeting the membership criteria of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization”.

He also informed that the Government is now finalizing a comprehensive document - the National Annual Programme under the auspices of the NATO-Ukraine Commission for 2020.  This document is said to center upon the interests of Ukrainian citizens.

The Minister of Defence of Ukraine Andrii Zahorodniuk emphasized that meeting the military criteria for NATO membership is one of the main priorities of the Ministry and its implementation has already commenced.

The Deputy Minister of Economic Development, Trade and Agriculture of Ukraine Svitlana Panaiotidi also drew attention to the fruitful cooperation with the Verkhovna Rada Committee on National Security, Defenсe and Intelligence towards achieving NATO standards.

The Head of the NATO Representation to Ukraine Alexander Vinnikov welcomed the creation of the first joint platform of the Cabinet of Ministers and the Verkhovna Rada for cooperation over Ukraine's Euro-Atlantic integration issues. The Euro-Atlantic transformation concerns not only the Ministry of Defence and the Armed Forces of Ukraine, but also the implementation of NATO standards in the security and defence sector, he unfolded.

According to the politician, the National Annual Programme under the auspices of the NATO-Ukraine Commission remains a key tool to bring the country closer to NATO - and he then called on "to exploit the potential of this document as much as possible".

Alexander Vinnikov emphasized: "At present, Ukraine has an excellent "window of opportunity" to take further important steps towards the Euro-Atlantic reform, because the people of Ukraine have given the authorities an unprecedented mandate for change". He called for this "window of opportunity" to be used.

The Head of the NATO Representation to Ukraine also assured of supporting Ukraine on its Euro-Atlantic path.
