Verkhovna Rada Chairperson Volodymyr Groysman meets with founder of Open Society Foundations George Soros Thursday

( Press Secretary of the Chairperson of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine )

On Thursday, Chairperson of the Verkhovna Rada Volodymyr Groysman met with founder of the Open Society Foundations George Soros.

The Parties discussed the course of reforms in Ukraine.

Groysman said that despite certain tension during the discussions in the walls of the Parliament, the Verkhovna Rada proved to be able to take decisions important for the country. In particular, he noted that on Thursday, the parliamentarians adopted 21 legislative acts, including the ones for the fields of economy and combating corruption. Groysman drew particular attention to the Law envisioning the establishment of the State Bureau of Investigation and mentioned the adopted anti-discrimination amendment to the Labor Code of Ukraine. He also informed that elaborate of the new law on state service was underway.

The Parties also discussed the decentralization and judicial reforms. The Chairperson of the Verkhovna Rada stressed that the decentralization of power would speed up the reforms. "As soon as we introduce new government system in the country, we improve living standards in the country and speed up the reforms," Groysman said.

Speaking about the judicial reform, Groysman noted that the Parliament had dismissed 227 judges and said he would initiate the elaboration of the new system of appointment of judges.

He also informed about the reform of internal parliamentary procedures in cooperation with the Needs Assessment Mission of the European Parliament headed by Pat Cox.

The Chairperson of the Verkhovna Rada also informed about an innovation in elaboration of the plenary meeting agenda — introduction of topic-based days dedicated to reformation of one or another field. In particular, next week it is planned to hold the Day of Education and a number of other topic-based days.

In turn, George Soros highly appreciated the work of the Parliament in the field of reforms in Ukraine and wished further success on this path.

Groysman congratulated George Soros on the state award bestowed by President Petro Poroshenko on Thursday.
