Ukraine-Canada: Parliamentary bridge of friendship

“We feel grateful to Ukrainian Canadians for supporting Ukraine, for preservation and popularization of Ukrainian culture abroad,” – Iryna Herashchenko during a meeting with Ukrainian diasporees in Canada

Within the framework of a parliamentary friendship group visit to Canada headed by the First Deputy Chairperson of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Iryna Herashchenko, there took place a range of meetings with representatives of the Ukrainian diaspora in Canada on June 9, 2018.

During a meeting with the President of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress Pavlo Grod, NGO and societies’ leaders, there were talks over the issues of anti-Russia sanctions, granting aid to Ukrainian servicemen, cooperation in demining, training and rehabilitation programmes for the Ukrainian Army. Particular attention was paid to the security and humanitarian situation in the Donbas, heavy violations of the human rights in the temporarily occupied Crimea, counteraction to propaganda of the Russian Federation.

The First Deputy Chairperson of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Iryna Herashchenko thanked the representatives of the Ukrainian diaspora in Canada for supporting Ukraine, preserving and popularizing Ukrainian culture abroad, informing the society about the situation in the Donbas and Crimea, holding actions in support of the release of political prisoners. "Canada consistently supports Ukraine. There is a great deal of work done by the local Ukrainian community, doing its utmost to inform the society about the situation in the Donbas and Crimea, conducts promotions in support of political prisoners", said I. Herashchenko.

The Ukrainian parliamentarians informed representatives of the Ukrainian diaspora about the progress in the medical reform, the law on the supreme anti-corruption court and a draft law on Ukraine’s national security to be adopted in the near future.

During the meeting, the state of play in trade and economy, in cultural and humanitarian cooperation between Ukraine and Canada was also discussed. Representatives of the Ukrainian diaspora reported that there would in autumn be opened the Holodomor victims’ memorial in Toronto.

On June 10, the parliamentary delegates, together with representatives of the Ukrainian diaspora in Canada, attended the Divine Services at the Holy Protection Church in Toronto and offered joint prayers for peace in Ukraine.

The First Vice-Speaker Iryna Herashchenko, as part of the delegation of the friendship group with Canada at the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, is on her visit to Canada from June 9 till June 2014.

The visit programme is scheduled to meet with Canadian officials and parliamentarians and with members of the Canada-Ukraine friendship group alongside representatives of the Ukrainian diaspora as well in particular.

The visit is planned to discuss the pressing issues of trade and economic, cultural and humanitarian cooperation of the countries, security and humanitarian situation in the Donbas, release of hostages and political prisoners, violations of the human rights in the occupied Crimea, and to coordinate common positions in parliamentary assemblies and international organizations.
