I.Herashchenko: Ukraine as political winner

( Information Department of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Secretariat )

“Ukraine has become a political winner within some past months. The wins were contributed by the tight working links between the President, the Parliament and the ministers,” – highlighted Iryna Herashchenko, the Vice-Speaker of the Parliament at the sitting of the informal parliamentary group “The Minsk platform” met to work out a peaceful settlement strategy for the eastern Ukraine’s situation.

On July 14 the informal parliamentary group “The Minsk platform” gathered to elaborate a peaceful settlement strategy for the eastern Ukraine’s situation with the assistance of representatives of various parliamentary fractions.

The gathering was informed of the results of EU-Ukraine Summit held in Kyiv, as well as of the recent visits of the Ukrainian President to the USA and France, the meetings with the UN and NATO Secretary Generals which took place in Kyiv the other day.

Security in Donbas, occupation of the Crimea, sanctions against Russia until the full restoration of Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty were reportedly the key themes of all the high level international meetings.

During the meeting more active talks within the Normandy format were hoped to come about so as to push the Minsk process forward.

MPs shared information about the meetings recently held within the Minsk platform and with the newly appointed U.S. envoy on Ukraine Kurt Volker, in particular. They also noted that they would appreciate a deeper involvement of parliamentarians into peacekeeping processes.

During the EU-Ukraine Summit called ‘Summit of the visa-free travel and the association’ there were lots of political issues discussed along with a variety of pragmatic and task-related points. The participants also exchanged their views over importance of consolidation for all the branches of government in addressing problems in security, environmental and humanitarian spheres of Donbas’s life, in working out certain legislative initiatives.

This time, the Minsk platform gathering assumed a format of mutual discussions with MPs–members of the Parliament’s committees on foreign affairs and on European integration.
